KALIAKRA - SHIP'S
CHARACTERISTICS
The sail training vessel Kaliakra is a symbol of the maritime
heritage of Bulgaria and is one of the fastest and best looking tall
ships in the world.
She was built at the Gdansk Shipyard, Poland in 1984 and is owned by
Navigation Maritime Bulgare. The ship was specially designed for the
training and qualification of students from the Maritime Academy in
Varna - the future officers of the Bulgarian merchant fleet.
The ship has participated on many occasions in the world-famous
Cutty Sark Tall Ships regatta organized by the International Sailing
Training Association (ISTA). The many highly placed results and the
international popularity she has gained have raised the prestige of
the Bulgarian national flag. During the Columbus Race 1992,
dedicated to the 500 years anniversary from discovery of America,
Kaliakra has sailed twice across the Atlantic Sea and finished third
among 143 ships.
A great number of visitors, members of royal families, head of
states, government officials and celebrities have been guests on
